A British family of 4, who get the equivalent of a £30,000 salary in benefits from the UK government, says

  • “we’re too fat to work”
  • “it’s not our fault, it’s in our genes”
  • “we need more money – it’s not enough”
  • “I don’t have time to exercise”

I’m not making this up – check for yourself:  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/5004431/Family-who-are-too-fat-to-work-say-22000-worth-of-benefits-is-not-enough.html .

I can’t describe how angry I am that there are human beings so willing to disclaim any and all responsibility for their own health.  I sure hope none of you have these beliefs.  I’m going to end the post here before I start typing words I’ll regret later.  What do you think?

  1. Um, yeah. Speechless.

  2. **** them. All the talk about their genetics and how it is not their fault that they are overweight..
Get off your *** and do something!

However the part which got me the most angry was when one of the daughters says that she is a university student, and that being such doesn’t allow her time to work out. This got to me the most because I am a university student myself and I train 4x a week.

With that said I guess that it is a good lie to tell herself when she sees herself in the mirror. It gives her an incentive to stay the way she is

  3. I was 54 and over 300 lbs. when the light went off. Stop stuffing your face and get out there and do something. I started slow but now 65 lbs lighter and in the gym 5 days a week and now I am hooked on weight training. It can be done by everyone THAT WANTS TO.

  4. Good for you Joe! What do you think made the most difference for you in losing the weight? Diet? Weight training/muscle mass? Cardio? Something else?

  5. Thanks, my success has been mainly diet and weight training, I don’t like running on a treadmill. I stick to a strict body builders type diet, white meat chicken, turkey and salmon with complex carbs and fiber, 5 small meals a day.I had a trainer for about 3 months that got me started on proper technique and the different muscle groups. I love super sets and keeping the heart rate up by short intervals between sets. I have gained muscle in places I never thought an old guy could.

I know alot of guys my age that need to do realize as I did, you don’t just live forever when you are killing yourself with food and a sedentary life style( riding a motorcycle and playing golf aint exercise). My light bulb was a new grand baby that just bonded with me, and I want to be around to see this boy grow up and to live an active life doing the things that I enjoy.

I love your sight and working on incorporating some of the info on shoulders in my work outs. Keep the good stuff coming. (PS. I read Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle by Tom Venuto several months back that helped in my nutrition education.)
