One of the most common squat mistakes is to start with your legs too far apart. Your legs should be at shoulder width or narrower with the toes pointed slightly outward. Use the Smith machine for squats if you’re having trouble with your form. This will help to keep the bar in the right position. Also, lifting heavy poundages can be scary without a spotter, and the catch racks on the Smith machine can really be a life saver if you end up going too heavy.
But the truth is, the problem most people have is not going too heavy on squats or leg presses. Remember, your legs are the largest muscle group on your body and they should be able to push much more weight than your other body parts. Keep that in mind as you plan your workouts.
I know the legs can be the easiest muscle group for many of us to overlook. They’re easy to hide and most people we meet in everyday life aren’t looking that closely at them. But developing your legs can be the key to unlocking your body’s potential and looking muscular everywhere else. They are the best muscles to work for adding sheer muscle mass and strength. Period.
