Is this the best way to build muscle definition in my legs?

I am a 20 year old female. I have recently started jogging for 20 minutes about 3 times a week. I want to get some muscle definition in my legs. After my first time jogging my legs were definitely sore since my muscles were getting worked. Is this enough to build some muscle definition or should I do some weight training as well?

Running rarely builds "definition" unless you are doing lots of sprinting. Jogging won't do it. But jogging will help lower overall bodyfat because it burns calories.

Two best exercises for leg definition are:
– various forms of lunges, with weights
– various forms of squats, with weights

Keep in mind "definition" means "low overall bodyfat plus sufficiently large muscles". If you miss either fo those components then you won't have definition.

Jogging one time isn't enough to judge anything by.  Being sore after one time jogging means nothing.

Dear Tester321,

Congratulations on your determination to get in shape, part of which is getting some muscle definition in your legs.  I wish I had known at 20 what I now know at 56; I'd probably be in much better shape.  You are off to a good start; don't let the nay-sayers ever distract you.

Almost all authorities, especially the ones who are in shape, will tell you that you need cardio, weights and good nutrition to get – and stay – in shape.  They are right!

Jogging can certainly be a part of your program.  So can other forms of cardio, some of which are not as high impact as jogging.  No form of exercise is exclusively cardio or exclusively resistance.  In fact, even using an elyptical trainer with adjustable tension can be viewed as resistance exercise and will build muscle.

Keep it up and have a happy new year 2010!
