ok, is it just me, or does every runner speed up when a car is passing them?  I noticed this last week when I ran without my ipod.  I run in rural areas so I only see cars about every few minutes.  And when I hear a car approaching, I noticed I speed up!!  I'm not sure if it's because of an ego thing ("I don't want that driver seeing me slacking – it might be someone I know!") or if there's some biorhythm thing going on where we are primaly hardwired to speed up when a fast animal approaches…

I bet horses don't know why they speed up when other horses come up along side them, or dogs must chase when they see a smaller animal running.

I think it's an instinctual or competitive thing in our nature as well.

I run on a narrow road, so, when I hear or see a car, I'm usually just trying to get over as far as I can.  I don't think I speed up, but I've noticed that I straighten my posture, so that I'm properly presented.

Part of my route is on a four lane, divided hwy. with a 65 mile speed limit and wide shoulders.  I don't speed up there either.  My mind must tell me It's pointless.

I actually ran down the road today to get to the store for my work break after my workout today. (North Carolina @ 3:15pm, you do the math…. it was hot as balls)  I actually was thinking the same thing Darrin, I noticed I caught myself saying "I want to look like I'm not even tired to that person."
