Well, I of course am not an expert, but there does seem to be evidence that CLA does help a bit with reducing body fat and increasing lean mass, though there are some inconsistencies in the various science studies on it. And there are some studies showing it helps reduce likelihood of some cancers.
However, if you are asking about it as a supplement, I'd say like I say for 90% of supplements that if you are eating healthy (especially grass-fed beef and/or grass fed dairy and/or free-range chicken eggs) then no need to do as a supplement. Keep in mind that non-fat dairy won't really have CLA. I've personally cut milk out for the past 6 months and have never been leaner. But this winter I'm planning to add milk back in but only grass-fed whole milk. Not sure my experiment-of-one will be anything applicable to others though!
