A retired Air Force Chief I know, now 85 years old, is in superb shape. He started looking out after his health, of course, when he was much younger!
One thing he still does is this exercise: Hold a five pound dumbbell in each hand, perpendicular to the ground, at chest height, with elbows pointing out (arms parallel to the ground). Extend the dumbbells out in front, with the dumbbells still perpendicular to the ground. Bring them back to the starting position for one rep.
This old boy does ten reps every day. I try to work this into my routine from time to time, using progressively heavier weights. I call it "Chief O pulls" after the man who taught me how to do it, but that isn't all that expressive.
Does anyone have a better (or a standardized) name for this exercise? Any advice on whether or not to do it, and what muscle group/s it helps?
