"Grip issues"? Isn't that a plus? Anyway, don't you have to grip a hex bar? Isn't a grip a grip?
I am shrugging a WHOLE lot less than 150lb dumbbells, mind you. In fact, I don't have a good set of dumbbells to use for shrugs. I am using lead shot in flour sacks!
I admit that the limiting factor for me doing it this way is my grip – my hands grow weary long before my traps do (whatever traps are!). However, I have always consoled myself with the thought that my grip will improve at the same time.
Just wondering. . . don't sneak up and try to give me a wedgie!

Ha! Sure, we all shuold work on our grip. For example, in my article on using wrist straps http://worldfitnessnetwork.com…..ng-straps/ , I suggest using those sparingly. But at some point, if your goal is physique based, then a certainly amount of isolation helps focus on a specific muscle and failing because of grip could mean a waste of an exercise (for example, for me, if I'm doing shrugs I do them AFTER my regular deadlifts and so my grip has already had some serious work; if I didn't use a hex bar for the shrugs I'd be wasting my time because I couldn't grip enough weight to make the shrugs worthwhile).
As an aside, always do "finishing" exercises that are isolation-types (like shrugs) towards the end of your workout. Your focus (and thus the start of your workouts) should always be on compounds.
Nobody gets wedgies doing compound movements!

I too, love the trap bar. And all the different types of torture you can put yourself through with them.
Trap bar really helped with my grip strength and added new found growth to my upper traps. I've been using trap bar jumps to replace power cleans. I think everyone should be doing them. If you want to be explosive, these should be a staple of your training.

Hey Metric.
My gym has a trap bar. Can you explain or provide a link on how to perform this trap-bar jump exercise.

Personally don't like the trap bar for my training…. Long legs + trab bar don't mix all that well….
