pullovers

Lately I've been doing dumbell pullovers.  I like the range of motion and the way they seem to work my pecs, lats, and (possibly) rear delts and upper tricep muscles.  At least that's what they seem to do.  They seem like a pretty good compound movement.  Sometimes I'll superset  close-grip bench press at the end.  It seems to work well for me, because I can pullover quite a bit, so the weight doesn't seem to light for the presses at the end.

I use a single dumbell just because it's easier to just grab the dumbell; lie on the bench and go to work, but…

Is a dumbell inferior to using a barbell, like a curl bar?

Is the pullover a worthwhile movement?

I do mine with a triceps bar, but prefer the machine for this because of the consistent resistence throughout the range of motion (one of the few machines I really like).  I've also recently experiemented with a cable pull-over.  I think I like that better than a bar because it too gives a more constant tension throughout the ROM.

But how do you rank the pullover as a lift in general?  Is it worthwhile occationally, or do you like to do them regularly?  I like them, but it may be just because it's one of the lifts I can actually move weight with and I can feel the glycogen all over my upper body after a set or two.

I know it's not big seven, but would you alternate it for rows, or for a pec exercise on occation?  I can't decide if it's a back movement or pec movement or both.

A good compound exercise. I personally use it as a supplemental lift for back in my workouts.  I like them, but don't base a workout around them.

It works the lats, some delts, and the tris.  I personally don't get any pec out of it.  But it's not really a sub for any other lift (that's one of the reasons I like it – it's pretty unique).

Like Cameron, I consider it a supplemental movement.  When I include it in a routine, it's towards the end, and only one day a week.

BTW Bruce Lee did them in his workouts all the time :)

Bruce Lee had a super muscular, upper back, even though he was rather lean.  Kind of like me, but he was cut a bit more and had more symmetry.  You can tell he favored his back muscles though.
