I've switched my grip for front squats to an unusual alternative. Most people do front squats with either a crossed-arm "bodybuilder" style (I call them genie front squats) or a powerlifter's "clean" grip. But I'm getting heavy enough with my front squats (for me at least) that the crossed arm version has balance issues and the clean vesrion hurts my wrists. So I'm using a version that's like the cross arm version – grip with palms down, knuckles up – but my arms don't cross. My right hand is on the right side of my neck and my left hand on the left side of my neck.
Anyone do them this way?
Well, here's the weirdest thing – my BICEPS get a huge pump during the workout and the next day they are sore. It's obviously an isometric hold position, but I'm surprised how intsense it is. Anyone ever experience the same?

Ive played round with the grips on the front squat. The grip you used Darrin, I couldnt really work with as old surgery in my hand complained to me alot.LOL
Have you tried using the wrist strap method?

Byron – other than one time "trying out" the towel method, I haven't really used it. For me, I found I was mentally focusing on the towel and so it detracted from the real lift.
Navid – first off, if you lift properly you will often get weird looks. It's actually unusual in most commercial gyms for people to lift properly! Of course, you also get weird looks if you lift really wrong. It's that mushy middle of "part right, but not really optimised" form that people ignore.
I'll try to find time to video it so that you can see. My camera doesn't zoom in enough though, but I'll try!

I get weird looks for just doing front squats, and sometimes lifters will ask me how I can even do them.
I'm doing Genie style; only 135 right now. I like the super strict form the clean method creates but my wrists and elbows can't hang. Even with the genie style, I'm limited to about 6 reps with medium weight, because I tend to want to go forward at the bottom and then the bar starts to roll forward. When that happens, I can try to come up real quickly with the bar out on my biceps or drop the bar, but the decision has to be quick. Once it starts rolling, the only way to stop it is to start coming up. Also, if I go for too many reps, I start getting sloppy, because my whole body has to stay so tight during this movement. If I put the bar too tight against my neck, I start to choke during the movement. If I really want to go intense with this exercise, I've either got a rolling bar or I'm choking, so for now, I'm just trying to get more used to it.
Of course I can drop the weight and go for reps but then I'm doing endurance work.
I'll test Darrins method, but I'm guessing that will take some getting use to.
